The function of PVC skirting

As we all know, PVC skirting is a kind of architectural profile used for interior decoration. The main function of this product is to hide the gap between the wall and the floor and protect the wall from collision damage. Additionally, certain types of baseboards can be used to hide indoor electrical wiring and provide auxiliary lighting. Baseboards can provide beautiful decorative effects to our interiors and make the indoor environment cleaner and tidier. Therefore, it is very necessary to install skirting lines on indoor walls.

01

What size of PVC skirting should I choose?

The size selection of skirting lines is an issue worthy of our attention. Usually, we choose the size of the skirting line according to the size of the indoor space. If your indoor space is relatively spacious, you can consider using 100mm height skirting lines. If your indoor space is relatively narrow, you can consider a 60mm height skirting line. There are no specific criteria for this selection. We can make the right decision based on our needs and the designer's suggestions.

02

Preparation for installing PVC skirting

Installing PVC skirting can be a very simple task or a frustrating one, depending on whether you have some knowledge about installing skirting. So, if you are confused about installing baseboards, our article will give you some help.

Prepare to install tools

  • PVC skirting

  • Saw or metal cutting machine

  • Measuring tools (e.g. tape measure)

  • Hammer

  • Nail

  • Adhesive

  • Gloves

  • Goggles

  • Pencil

  • Safety mask

  • Nail gun

  • Glue gun

  • Sandpaper

  • Caulk

03

  • Installation environment check

After preparing the installation tools for the baseboards, we also need to check the indoor installation environment. Start by checking the wall for smoothness and plumpness, trimming if necessary.

Secondly, clean the installation area to ensure that there is no debris and dust in the installation area, so as not to affect the later installation effect of the skirting board.

Finally, determine the installation height and installation angle of PVC. We can use a level to assist with this process.

Installation steps of PVC skirting

When the above preparations have been completed, I believe you can easily complete the installation of PVC skirting lines. Now you can follow the steps below to install:

Remove the old baseboard

If you are renovating your home, you will need to remove the old baseboards first. So you start by using a pry bar to remove the old baseboards. This process requires as much care as possible to avoid damage to the wall.

Of course, if you're designing a new home, you can skip this step.

04

Measure the installation area

Use a tape measure or other measuring tool to measure the area where the baseboard will be installed. And use the pencil tool to make length marks on the PVC skirting.

Cutting PVC skirting

Use a saw or metal cutter to cut the baseboards. During the cutting process, you need to pay attention to the following key operations:

Sectional cutting. After using a cutting machine to cut a section of skirting line, it is recommended to install it in the installation area first and check whether its length matches the installation area.

Treatment of internal and external corners of walls. For different types of skirting, the inner and outer corners will be treated differently. Some types of baseboards come with matching accessories such as left end caps, right end caps, internal and external corner fittings, and connectors. These accessories can help the baseboards create a better decorative surface. In addition, some types of skirting boards do not have related accessories, so we need to use a metal cutting machine to cut the skirting boards at 45 degrees to complete the installation of the inner and outer corners.

05

Install PVC baseboards

There are many ways to fix PVC skirting, but the installation method is not complicated. We can learn about the following main centralized installation methods:

a. Direct nail installation

Installing baseboards using nails is the most common installation method. We just need to place the skirting on the wall and then use a nail gun to fix the skirting to the wall.

08

b. Install using adhesive

Applying adhesive to the back of the baseboards is also a common way to install baseboards. This installation method is very convenient. We only need to apply the "S" or "well"-shaped adhesive on the back of the skirting, stick the skirting to the bottom of the wall, and then gently press the skirting to fix it.

06

c. Use the bottom buckle to secure the installation

This type of installation usually does not require nails and adhesive to secure the baseboard. Because the baseboards themselves are designed to be installed without the use of nails and adhesives. This installation method only needs to install the bottom buckle part on the wall first, and then snap the skirting line into the bottom buckle to firmly fix the skirting line.

07

Caulking baseboard gaps

When you have completed the above work, congratulations, you have completed most of the baseboard installation project.

But if you can’t stop there, you’ll also need to fill the gap between the baseboards and the wall. For this process, you will need to use caulk to get the job done. After filling the gaps with caulk, you can prevent dust and other debris from falling into the gaps, and the skirting will have a perfect decorative effect.

09

Clean the installation area

After we install the baseboards, we also need to remove the protective film on the surface of the PVC baseboards. And clean the installation area.

10

Difficulties you may encounter when installing PVC baseboards

Problem: The baseboard is installed unevenly

Solution: Check the flatness of the wall and trim it if necessary.

Problem: The baseboards are not flush with the floor

Solution: Adjust the installation height or fill the gap with caulk.

Problem: Cracked baseboard seams

Solution: Use glue or adhesive to resecure the connection.

Conclusion

When you have completed all the above work, congratulations, your hands-on ability is very commendable.

When you install PVC skirting correctly through the above steps, you will be surprised how beautiful your indoor space becomes. These baseboards will protect your walls and floors from accidental bumps that could damage your walls.

Through the steps and precautions provided in this guide, I believe you can complete the installation of PVC skirting and add beauty and comfort to your indoor environment.
