6 Ways To Finish The Edges of Wood Veneers

Wood veneer, also known as decorative board, is a building material used for indoor wall or furniture surface decoration, usually made of natural wood or artificial board.

By covering the surface of the substrate with a thin layer of PVC film, a variety of beautiful and natural texture effects are formed.

Wood veneer structure

Wood veneer panels usually consist of three parts: surface covering material, intermediate substrate, and edge sealing material.

Its surface treatments include PET veneer, melamine-impregnated film paper, PVC veneer, solid wood veneer, paint veneer, etc.

The intermediate substrate will vary depending on the surface process, but in most cases, particleboard, density board, multi-layer board, ecological board, solid wood board, etc. are used.

The edge sealing of wood veneer panels usually uses EVA, PUR laser edge sealing, or diamond edge sealing.

Advantages of Wood Veneers

1. Exquisite appearance

The natural texture and feel of the wood grain will give people a warm and comfortable feeling, creating an elegant and natural atmosphere. Whether it is modern minimalist style or retro style, the wood veneer can be well coordinated with it.

2. Excellent durability

Compared with traditional wall decoration materials, the advantage of wood veneer is that it is more durable. After being treated with moisture-proof, waterproof, and insect-proof, it will not be damaged or deformed after long-term use.

3. Environmental protection

Wood is a renewable resource and no harmful substances will be produced during the wood processing process.

4. Easy to maintain

Wooden finishes have the advantage of low maintenance costs. Simply wipe with a damp cloth regularly to maintain its surface gloss and beauty.

Disadvantages of Wood Veneers

1. Higher price

Compared with materials such as wallpaper and paint, the price of wood veneer is relatively high and may not be suitable for projects with limited budgets.

2. Susceptible to moisture

Although wood veneer can be waterproofed to enhance its waterproof performance, it is still susceptible to moisture and mold if exposed to a humid environment for a long time.

3. Pest risk

If the wood veneer is not treated with insect-proofing, it can easily be eaten by insects, affecting the appearance and service life.

4. Deformation

Wood expands and contracts with temperature changes. If it is not installed properly, it is likely to crack and deform.

6 Ways to Finish the Edges of Wood Veneers

1. 45° Bevel Begonia Angle

Begonia angle is a finishing process often used in architectural decoration or furniture making. It is a treatment method for blunting the outer angle.

The wood veneer panels adopt the 45° bevel begonia angle finishing process, and its installation effect will be more beautiful. There are no exposed sharp corners, and it is not easy to harm people.

However, since this splicing method has no fixed fasteners, it must be reinforced with nails, and the joints between the boards are exposed to light. Once cracked later, it will affect the appearance.

2. Cut 45 degrees and then splice

When trimming the wood veneer wall panels at 45 degrees at the outer corners, it is necessary to accurately measure and trim the panels first to ensure that the angles on both sides are consistent, and then grind, fix, and splice.

Its advantages are hidden joints and no side seams on the front and sides, but it requires high construction accuracy.

This method can improve the decoration's aesthetics, but due to the complex cutting and installation processes, special attention should be paid to the cutting accuracy and flatness of the corners during the construction process to ensure the best visual effect and stability.

However, although this splicing method makes it easy to achieve a seamless appearance, the corners after splicing are relatively sharp, which can easily induce the risk of collision and injury.

3. 45-degree Begonia angle slotting and corner collision

The advantage of this splicing method is that the splicing is not easy to crack and the effect is beautiful.

Then, it has very high requirements for construction technology. It is necessary to slot at both ends of the two wall panels and then cross-splice them, and the outer side will present a Begonia angle. This process has very strict control over the slot position, slot width, and slot depth. Once the cutting is deviated, it is easy to cause the problem of unsightly splicing.

04

4. Embedding wood strips in wood veneer

By making grooves inside the wood veneer, embed the wood strips into one of the wallboards, embed the other end of the wood strips into the other wallboard, and gently knock the wallboard in with a hammer to make it more stable.

After the splicing is completed, a certain width of groove surface will be left between the wallboards, which will form a strong sense of lines on the wall decoration and make the wall more three-dimensional.

This installation method is very beautiful and does not require nails to fix. However, its processing method has high technical requirements. If the groove inside the wallboard is too deep or too shallow, it will affect the final decorative effect.

5. A gap on one side after splicing the wood veneer

This splicing method is also called male and female groove splicing. Its installation method is unique, there will be no splicing errors, and it is stable and reliable after splicing.

During processing, a groove needs to be made on one of the wood veneer panels, and the depth of the groove needs to be less than the length of the extended part of the other wall panel to ensure that there is a reserved gap on one side of the wall panel after splicing.

The width of the female groove must be consistent with the width of the male groove, otherwise, it cannot be embedded during splicing.

06

6. Begonia angle bevel splicing

The begonia angle bevel splicing method also has no gap edges, and the installation effect is more beautiful.

During construction, you only need to open an "L"-shaped right-angle groove at one end of a wall panel, and then splice it with another wood veneer panel.

This installation method has no fixing buckle and also needs to be reinforced with a glue gun.

07

Summarize

Wood veneer panels are finished at the joints and corners to ensure that their edges are more beautiful and neat while increasing the stability of the structure.

Regardless of the finishing method used, it can reduce the exposure of the board seams, avoid cracking due to thermal expansion and contraction, and enhance the overall visual effect of the wall.

In addition, the finishing treatment can also play a protective role, reduce the wear of the edges of the wood veneer panels, and protect the service life of the wall and panels.

Choosing a finishing method that suits your project needs can make your wall panel joints smoother and more natural, enhancing their decorative effect.
